I have been looking for the best way to learn Japanese for about over one year and tried various textbooks and other websites to see what helps me better to start and continue with it.
As a daily visitor to the NHK World Japan website, I tried that 'Easy Japanese' textbook and online lessons. What always raises the question in my mind when it comes to Japanese in writing are the hiragana or katakana signs above the kanji in small display. I wonder why that is and for what reason?
I have provided the link to the first lesson from the mentioned textbook to show an example for what my question is about. I'm not yet that familiar with the different scripts in Japanese and the example I am referring to is an expression by Mi Ya 'Sugu chikaku desu' on page six.

I would like to know whether the way this line is written in Japanese is the way it should be written or whether it would suffice to use either of the scripts (kanji or hiragana or katakana) in writing.
