Earlier this week I was looking for a way to type the sounds consisting of two kana (like きゃ kya, I think I read somewhere they're called "yōon") and I discovered that the diacritic button on the kana keyboard turns the kana to their smaller versions but it only does so for the kana that are actually used in their smaller versions (so ゃゅょ for yōon andっ for doubling the following consonant).
But I discovered that it also turns the kana for あいうえお to their smaller versions, and I have never seen these used in Japanese words and no Japanese teaching website ever taught me about them.
So I was wondering: what are the smaller versions of あいうえお (a, i, u, e, o) used for in Japanese? Does anyone know?
